Message: i am a south indian vaidik brahmin of the bharadhwaj clan.but its really interesting to learn that there is a warrior brahmin class still surviving.there are many broken links that need to be linked in order to understand the vastness of our culture.maharshi brighu is known to have an iranian wife by the name "polaomi".but the sacrifices of the mohyal community in preserving the sanathana dharma learnt here are really worth praising.may the "pithr devatas"(the seven sages) bless the community.

Subject: Warrior Brahmins
Message: It was interesting to read about Mohyals.I have been hearing about Mohyals since childhood.I used to be sceptical. But after going through the article I now realise that Bhumihars of Bihar-UP have same characteristics as Mohyals of Punjab.I understand that Late Sunil Datta was also a Mohyal.Legend of Sunil Datta itself is sufficient to prove the high level values of Mohyals.
Characteristics of Bhumihars and Mohyals are very similar.Bhumihars also donot practice priesthood and mostly are land owners.During British period a large no of Jamindars in Bihar were Bhumihars.Although Bhumi means land, there is another meaning also.We have districts like Singhbhum,Birbhum,Manbhum and a region Dhalbhum. Here, the word Bhum denotes area or an administratative zone or some revenue unit. It's meaning is some what like Khand, like Bundelkhand,Jharkhand etc.Perhaps in earlier times the word Bhumi meant something like district,or some revenue unit like Jagir or Taluka. Thus the word Bhumihar also may have a meaning like Jagirdars or Jamindar.Perhaps this is the reason that such a large proportion of Jamindars in Bihar were Bhumihars.
Although Bhumihars connect themselves with legend of Parashuram it is not a strictly historical fact.Perhaps Bhumihars are a product of some social/political or religious process which is not clearly known today. We have some evidence of Brahmin kings.Pushyamitra Sunga is perhaps the earliest known Brahmin king.He and his dynasty ruled Magadha for about 185 years and were successors of Mouryans and successfully fought against greeks when they invaded India 2nd time. They were succeeded by Kanvas who again were Brahmans. After Kanvas the Magadh kingdom vanished. Then we have Kadambas in South.I have heard that the last Hindu king of Sindh that is Dahar was also a Brahmin. The legendry Hindushahi kings of Punjab-Kabul were also Brahmins. So from time to time we have Brahman rulers in our country. In many a cases they have been successors of Budhist dynasties.Perhaps they snatched the as a last effort to save the empire/state from disintegration.
Thanks
